The Idea:

I was attempting to make a marble seamless tile, and I scanned a hunk of marble I had.  Well, my fingertips showed up in the scan and looked so weird coming out of the black void like that... I couldn't resist.  Then I got the idea of having the fingers holding a mirror.  Finally, I figured out something for it to reflect!

Tools:

Mustek CG-8000 Colour Hand Scanner, Photoshop 3, Kai's Power Tools 2, Paint Shop Pro

Main Image:

I took the scan and cut out the marble slab between the fingers.  Serendipitously, it left some edge lines behind.  I rotated and positioned the fingers (w/ lines).  With the Lasso tool using anchored points (ALT/OPT) I defined the mirror shard.  I saved the selection, then used the border command to make an edge on the shard.

I created the reflection in a separate image file.  I finally decided I wanted something like the scene in ReBoot where the web creature comes through Hexadecimal's looking glass.
This is a KPT fractal with a twirl and a pinch.  I shaded the center much as I did with the central panel of Triptych the Light Fantastic.  I exported the "web creature" to Paint Shop Pro to get some edge effects.  The horizontal and vertical edge filters of PSP are really cool.  They obliterate the image, though, so work with a copy.
Back in 'Shop, I combined the original image with some of its edges to create some highlights and rounding on the black "tentacles."
I pasted the image into the mirror and covered it with a light KPT Gradient of blue light & transparency.  Finally, I added a lens flare.

Background & Text:

The background is the SAME space nebula that I've used about five times now.  (See Future Fantasy for one).  For this go-round, I changed the hue of the nebulae to blue to make it darker and more subtle

.
After the picture was done, I extended the bottom of the canvas for the title and pertinent copyright info.  The bar is a KPT Gradient.  I applied the same Gradient to the title lettering, but lightened it up a bit.  The info text is a slightly skewed LCD font, painted purple and lightened up.  (Yes, amazing, I didn't use CorelDraw!)
